Back in 2012, I created a YouTube account primarily for learning purposes. As someone who spent a significant amount of time in the US while having family back in Sweden, YouTube became a means to share videos privately with my Swedish relatives. Besides, the platform offered an extensive range of learning videos on various topics, all available for free. The abundance of educational content on YouTube and its role as the second largest search engine in the world allowed me to learn practically anything I desired. Whether for entertainment or problem-solving, YouTube had a lot to offer.
Transitioning into Creating Videos
In 2018, as I approached my 60th birthday, I sought a new learning project for myself. Being a geek inclined towards computers, I contemplated learning PHP coding or a new language. However, my newfound Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, with its impressive camera capabilities, sparked my interest in video creation. Interestingly, this realization came seven years after my late husband, a videographer, passed away. Regretfully, I had not paid much attention to his work during our time together. Therefore, I decided to embark on a journey of learning how to create videos, using my phone as a starting point.
Learning Video Creation
YouTube once again became my primary resource for learning how to create videos. I extensively watched tutorials, read blogs, and scoured articles on video creation with mobile devices. To edit my videos, I discovered a suitable app called Kinemaster for mobile editing. Throughout the summer and early fall of that year, I focused on filming, editing, and improving my craft.
Transitioning to YouTube Creator
As I became more proficient in video creation, the idea of starting a YouTube channel started to take shape. Watching numerous videos about starting a YouTube channel, I realized the import byance of having a clear niche, being consistent with uploads, and creating a brand for oneself. Nonetheless, I initially lacked a clear understanding of my audience and my purpose for starting a channel. Consequently, my plans involved a detailed website and videos comparing Sweden and the US. However, in hindsight, I realize I should have focused more on a specific audience, such as tourists or Swedish people coming to the US.
The Value Beyond Income and Fame
YouTube has provided significant personal growth and unexpected benefits throughout my journey. Foremost, being in front of the camera has transformed my confidence, making me more relaxed in real-life interactions. As a somewhat introverted individual, I have become more outgoing and comfortable in social situations. Additionally, the learning curve in video creation and editing has expanded my skills immensely, exposing me to new techniques and concepts I never knew existed.
Furthermore, YouTube has allowed me to form connections with other creators and viewers. The YouTube community has become a valuable group of friends, providing support and inspiration. The trust and camaraderie I have developed with these individuals surpass any expectations I initially had. One such example is an artist who created a drawing of a group of creators I connected with on Facebook. This artwork serves as a reminder of the friendships forged through YouTube.
